Overview of Canadian Passport Photo Rules
Passport Canada (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada β IRCC) enforces some of the strictest passport photo rules in the world. Unlike the US 2x2 inch standard, Canadian photos require a rectangular 50 mm wide x 70 mm high (2 x 2 3/4 inches) format.

Back of Photo Stamping Requirements
In Canada, the back of ONE photo must contain specific information written or stamped by the photo taker:
- 1Date Taken: The exact date the photo was taken (e.g., YYYY-MM-DD).
- 2Name & Address of Photographer/Studio: The commercial studio or individual photo provider name and physical address.
- 3Guarantor Statement & Signature: For passport applications, your guarantor writes: *"I certify this to be a true likeness of (applicant name)"* and signs their name.
Tip for DIY At-Home Photos: If submitting a home-taken photo with an online renewal or PR application, print your 50x70mm photos on photo paper and write the date, your full name, and your guarantor's statement clearly on the back using a fine felt-tip pen.
